A “hey, whats up?”/”nothing much” can only go so far. I hate it when people tell me I’m boring in a dead conversation. What do you expect? I know nothing about you, I have nothing to say. I hate it when people expect me to entertain them. It’s a really nice change to have someone else try to bring up a topic. It’s nice when people don’t want just another boring exchange of words.
